ENGC November 2023 USPSA Match
Shot Production at the ENGC monthly USPSA match again (did it last month, too), and had a good time. Mostly. Had failure-to-feed issues (my Glock just don't seem to like 147 or 150 grain flat-nose bullets, which is ANNOYING) on the last two stages, and while one cost me 1.89 seconds (which hurt a lot), the other cost me **7.61** seconds, which just killed the stage.
On the other three stages, though, I did pretty well, especially against a number of people who are M and A class shooters in Carry Optics, Limited, and Open.
Just wish the gun had run. But....it is on me to work out a match-ready gun-and-ammo combination. If it doesn't work, I should have done a better job.
It was fun shooting ...

KCSM October IDPA Match -- CO and SSP

Shot the match at Mill Creek hosted by the KCSM IDPA club on October 28th, 2023 in both Carry Optics AND Stock Service Pistol. It was interesting how close my scores were on each stage if the stage design itself didn't give that division a particular advantage for stages 1 and 4, it was all on the shooter, and my final scores were incredibly close when comparing the two divisions. Pro-Am is all about how many steel targets you can knock down within the par time, which makes for a VERY different set of priorities on a stage particularly since everyone is limited to a 10-round mag capacity. I had a couple good stages, a couple of poor-accuracy stages, and one stage with two malfunctions (which kills you in a par-time stage). It was still fun but it really shows that I need...

Shot the stages at the Marksman indoor IDPA match on October 15, 2023. (In Carry Optics division.) I can be nicely fast if the targets are fairly close, even with no-shoots or hardcover, so this match went well for me. (And I only designed the third stage, so the other two weren't my fault!) The second stage in particular with the required 3-per-target (unlimited scoring) was a blast to shoot. ...

    At the start of the Video, the guy explains "The New York Reload was originally for revolvers!", "Today, most people carry semi-autos as their primary", "We aren't comparing reloading a revolver to a New York Reload". Oh, wait, no he doesn't.

  • @Sparks52
    @Sparks52 3 месяца назад

    The New York Reload concept came about among plainclothes police doing surveillance in the revolver era without speed loaders. They carried reload rounds loose in their suit and sport coat pockets. Pulling out another revolver was infinitely faster than ejecting the spent casings from a revolver and fumbling around with loose rounds reloading it, especially the latter. Note that a revolver reload using speed loaders can be as fast as a magazine reload with a pistol, if one is practiced with the technique.

    • @PrecisionResponse
      @PrecisionResponse 3 месяца назад

      Regarding the first half of your comment: Yes, we know. We ALL know that already. It has no bearing on the reason for this video. Seriously, read the linked article or one of the MANY responses to this video already. Regarding your last statement: No. Even Jerry Miculek wouldn't claim that. If one practices equally as much with speedloaders as with a semi-auto reload, the semi-auto reload is going to be faster, by quite a lot.

    • @Sparks52
      @Sparks52 3 месяца назад

      @@PrecisionResponse See the Joel Persinger and Massad Ayoob "Stress Reload" technique. It's as fast as a magazine reload in a semi-auto. Fumbling with loose ammunition in coat pockets is what got seven of eight FBI agents taken down and very nearly completely defeated in detail by a single, determined bank robbery suspect -- who knew how to conduct a firefight (his accomplice was out of the fight after the first shot was fired).

    • @PrecisionResponse
      @PrecisionResponse 6 месяцев назад

      Malfunctions are handled differently from reloads---in the case of a gun malfunction, if you drop a live round, or a magazine with live rounds, as a part of your malfunction clearance, you do NOT get penalized for that. So if you have a gun malfunction, do what you need to clear it, and move on without worrying about leaving rounds behind.

    A non relevant test, not true to real life. Try doing these tricks in the dark when someone is shooting at you and you are trying to move out of the way. Or try the real life scenarios of tripping and losing the gun or try the reloading trick with one hand if your other hand is disabled, or if you are grappling with an armed attacker, or you have a dysfunctional stoppage like a stove pipe round you cannot clear right away. Or try what happened in the Miami shootout when one agent had his weapon hit by an incoming round and shot right out of his hand thereby disarming him in the middle of the fight. Another agent gave him his second gun in that case. The term NY reload did originate in a time when revolvers were the main carry. But, given that all of these things have happened at one time or another, the point was to have an alternate source that would be an answer in any of these events, not just a trick out on the range. The second weapon is a more realistic alternative in all of these scenarios and that is why the statement is true that a second weapon gets you re armed faster over a wide range of possible scenarios that could happen to you.

    • @PrecisionResponse
      @PrecisionResponse 7 месяцев назад

      "...and that is why the statement is true that a second weapon gets you re armed faster over a wide range of possible scenarios that could happen to you." Too bad that isn't the statement normally made regarding this situation, as the article linked in the description clearly states. All of the stuff you have just said makes little sense---they either aren't the problem you think they are, or they aren't describing the situation we are discussing. "Try doing these tricks in the dark when someone is shooting at you and you are trying to move out of the way." I can both reload OR draw a new gun perfectly well while moving in the dark. Having someone shooting at me will change both of those situations equally. Your comment is irrelevant. "Or try the real life scenarios of tripping and losing the gun or try the reloading trick with one hand if your other hand is disabled, or if you are grappling with an armed attacker, or you have a dysfunctional stoppage like a stove pipe round you cannot clear right away. " Tripping and losing the gun? So, to make an argument, you are literally requiring me to drop something that is of utmost importance at that point in time? (And....you know, I can pick things up again.) "...try the reloading trick with one hand if your other hand is disabled..." So you have to come up with a situation that doesn't match the statement we are actually testing, which was "a new york reload is faster than a standard reload" which is a statement that many people think is the truth, which is why this test is being done? (Oh, and I can reload with one hand. Matter of fact, most defensive trainers, and especially police trainers, show exactly how to do this. Last time I had to do it in a class was at the Rogers Shooting School, and I had no trouble doing it under the time constraints they have in their drills. If I am grappling with an armed attacker, how does that change anything about the gun I have in my hand? Why would I need to grab a different gun, or reload? If I have a stove pipe, I CAN clear that right away. If you are going to make up a firearm malfunction to fit your requirements, you should at least use one that isn't capable of being cleared, like a squib or something. "Or try what happened in the Miami shootout when one agent had his weapon hit by an incoming round and shot right out of his hand thereby disarming him in the middle of the fight." Yup, that can certainly happen. Has nothing to do with whether or not drawing a second gun is faster than a standard reload. "But, given that all of these things have happened at one time or another, the point was to have an alternate source that would be an answer in any of these events, not just a trick out on the range. " So...you think that a standard reload is "just a trick out on the range"? That's your level of knowledge. Hm. Much is explained. And "the point" wasn't what you are claiming. THE POINT was simple---many people think that dropping the gun and drawing a backup gun is faster than simply reloading. Hence the test. And that showed quite clearly that drawing a new gun ISN'T faster than a standard reload. That has nothing to do with what choice people should make regarding carrying a second gun OR carrying a reload. (Or, you know, BOTH.) It just means that the next time you hear someone saying that a new york reload is the fastest reload, you'll know how much credence to give to their opinion, because they are wrong. Similarly, when talking to someone like you who makes statements that are irrelevant to the actual situation or don't make sense, we can immediately see that you are bad at looking at the situation as it is, and instead make up things to justify your opinion about situations you don't understand.

    • @PrecisionResponse
      @PrecisionResponse 9 месяцев назад

      I think that for me personally, I like it at 10 rounds, because I like the stage planning that has to happen. From the perspective of the sport, I think that 15 rounds is probably a better idea, because there's a bunch of people out there with new guns that all hold at least 15 rounds, and the gun they bought came with three mags---that isn't quite enough mags for current-Production, but would suffice quite well for future-Production. Stage plans would open up a little (though if you have a club that always makes arrays in sets of 8 rounds, not really), but you'd still have to do more stage planning than Limited and so on. I think it would keep the "flavor" of Production while makes it a good division for A) people who like making stage plans and the thinking required, and B) folks who have a gun and want to get started in USPSA. I figure it is coming, and it won't hurt the sport at all. And it is a much better fit for a lot of people than Limited Minor!

  • @PrecisionResponse
    @PrecisionResponse 10 месяцев назад

    Here are some of the things I noticed when watching this video: Stage 1: Reload---slow, mag stuck in pouch (need to adjust the tension on that, plus clean the outside of the mags--perhaps some MagSlick?) Given it was a Limited stage, I'm fine with the shot speed, as I needed to have all down zero hits. Stage 2: Not bad opening, good transitions, and good reload. Movement was not very efficient, though. Didn't need nearly as much, didn't need to lean, should have instead dropped weight and shifted so I was more stable with an upright posture, which makes for easier shooting. (Watch it again and see how much I shifted in getting to the last position, AND also leaned while staying high. Dropping the weight would have made that a lot easier, faster, and more stable.) Stage 3: Movement was pretty good (looks like the mag stuck on the reload again, though) but position entry was slow and tense---need to relax into position, letting gravity ground me, as opposed to feeling like I need to crunch down into a shooting position. (Also paused after the third headshot in the beginning. I should have trusted my sights/trigger and just moved--or given the shot more respect in the first place so that I was certain of my hit. Either way, I should have left immediately after the shot.) Need to be ready to shoot when entering a position, so as not to waste time.

    I like IDPA's ruleset. Yes, USPSA's does create a higher skill ceiling and in that sense is "better" as a pure sport. IDPA though does try to strike a nice balance between a fun/playable/competitive sport and a focus on things that really matter in defensive encounters. Accuracy does matter a LOT in real life. A person you're shooting at in an actual defensive encounter is posing a deadly threat and needs to be incapacitated/stopped before you safely stop. Hits need to be to vital areas, or a determined attacker will continue posing a threat. Misses in real life are a really big deal. Every bullet you fire has a lawyer attached as the saying goes. If anything innocent party hits are penalized harshly enough. The priority/cover rules can be a little weird, but there's definitely logic behind them. The concealment rule, if anything isn't pushed far enough. You certainly can carry a firearm out and about in the way IDPA competitors do, but I don't know many who do.

      I'm not sure which part of the video you are talking about, I'm afraid. Are you talking about the two different versions of tactical reload? In that case, the difference is merely how you handle retaining and stowing the original magazine. (Pick up the new mag first, or stow the old one first---that's the choice to make.) If instead you meant the difference between the two reload types---in an emergency reload, you let the old magazine fall, and leave it behind, while in a tactical reload, you retain the old magazine (normally in a pocket or something similar).

    Assuming division capacity of 10 rounds plus 1 in the chamber; May I recommend taking the first 10 shots, keep 1 in the chamber then re-load on the move to the 3rd position. No need to waist the 11th round if you didn't need a make up shot. Unless the stage write-up requires only 10 in the mag and nothing in the chamber, that's the way I would do it.

      This video was made prior to the newest revision of the rules, where reloading with a round in the chamber while dropping an empty magazine was still illegal. At the time, you had to force emergency reloads, and couldn't do a speed reload with an empty magazine. So....this video made more sense at that time. Now, indeed, you'd shoot 10, do a speed reload, and keep going.

    The most unrealistic thing about a "New York reload" is being able to get a gun in New York in the first place.

      TRUTH. (Well, unrealistic if you are a law-abiding person.)

    CDP, 45acp , how many mags can you carry on top of the one in the gun?

    • @PrecisionResponse

      In CDP, you can carry two additional magazines each loaded with 8 rounds.

    NY Reload

  • @RandomFerengi
    @RandomFerengi Год назад

    There's some present-day irony about this as well. In 2013, the SAFE act was written and later passed, banning features on "assault weapons" (Pistol grips, vertical foregrips, muzzle devices, etc.) meaning that if you wanted to own something like an AR-15 after the registration deadline, you'd have to neuter it to fit the state's definition of a SAFE act compliant rifle. One of the workarounds of doing this was permanently fixing a magazine (10 round limit by the way, bummer) into your rifle, which then allowed you to keep features on your rifle. A lot of people joke in the state that this technique is still a valid way of "reloading" lmfao.

    Can I reload gun by pulling out a bazooka?

    • @PrecisionResponse
      @PrecisionResponse Год назад

      Sure! Or at least, you can do the equivalent of a New York reload that way. Well, assuming you had a coat big enough to conceal it in the first place. :)

    Hi! we are starting this activity with some friends and a discussion always arises regarding how many magazines a shooter from the SSP division can carry with him, as I understand it in the 2023 updated manual it says that the shooter can start the stage with 1 magazine inserted in the firearm and 2 additional in the pocket or magazine holder. Other colleagues indicate that since the capacity was changed to 15 rounds in SSP you can only have a total of 2 maximum magazine per shooter. Could you confirm if there are 2 or 3 magazines maximum for SSP? Thank you so much!

    • @PrecisionResponse
      @PrecisionResponse Год назад

      3 total--one in the gun, and two extra on body in some fashion. Rule 8.1.4.2: Divisions starting with 8 or more rounds in all loading devices are allowed to start with the loaded firearm plus two additional loading devices. There was no change to that rule even after the capacity rules for SSP changed, so it is still three total.
